The 1939 11th Party Congress was given the ironic name "National Party Day of Peace" (Reichsparteitag des Friedens) when all along Hitler and Stalin were planning the surprise attack and dismemberment of Poland. The big rally was cancelled on short notice on August 15th. The next week on August 23 Germany and the Soviet Union signed a non aggression pact with a secret protocol. The next week, on September 1, Germany invaded Poland which started World War Two. As agreed to in the protocol, on September 17 the Soviets invaded Poland from the East. Even though the Soviet Union was just as guilty for the premeditated invasion of Poland as Germany, France and England did not declare war on the USSR. The German SS and the Soviet NKVD were both guilty of horrific war crimes.
