1937 German Red Cross
1st Class Neck Cross with Oakleaves
The Red Cross 1st Class Neck Order was reserved for High NS Party High Leaders or members of the armed forces holding the rank of General Officer. This high social class medal is very scarce, not maker marked, but probably only made by the famous firm of Godet in Berlin. This medal is 52 mm, white enamel with a slightly yellowing shellac coating, the cross and loop have a high karat mercury-fire-gilt finish. There is a small chip on one arm of the cross. The 29x11 mm three color enameled soldered eagle is in perfect condition. The three gold oakleaves loop, 27.5x16 mm, has a rough bottom edge and green and white oxidation along the solder seam that comes with age (a little problem that any jeweler can make disappear). The 5.8x52 cm ribbon neck ribbon is red moire watered silk or rayon fabric with white edging. The 8mm wide tie strings and ribbons pass the blacklight test. They are old.
I got this medal from a fellow collector. He purchased it in 1997 from a WW2 Army Air Corps ground crewman who later passed away in 2004. I will pass along the vets name to the buyer. With the collapsing euro, and trouble ahead for the dollar, this would make an excellent investment.
