Spanish
Cross Next of Kin
The Spanish Cross: instituted on April 14 1939 for Germans who volunteered in the Spanish Civil War (July 1936-
March 1939). The Condor Legion fought on the side of General Franco
against the forces of the Spanish Republic and their foreign volunteers. Because of their semi-official status no medals were awarded until one month after the war.
Spanish Civil War Death Honor Cross: established the same day as the Spanish Cross to
commemorate those who died during the Spanish conflict. The
award was a smaller version of the Spanish Cross presented to the next of kin for soldiers killed,
missing in action, or who died from disease and wounds. A
total of 315 Honor Crosses were awarded. Two piece construction, bronze
plated tombac, 40 mm, 12.4 gm, 15 cm postwar replacement ribbon, very rare cross, light wear.
